The Milford Columbus Committee was formed in 1991 by Mr. Mike Petrucelli and Mr. Sam Bergami, Jr. to celebrate the five hundredth anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ voyage to the New World.

In it’s first year of inception, the club membership was comprised of 12 successful individuals of Italian heritage, coming from diverse professions,  but who also shared the common vision of giving back to the community.  They began by raising funds in order to provide scholarships to deserving, hard working students needing a helping hand.

Recognizing the importance of education in their own upbringing and success, the Committee members continue to devote themselves to fund-raising activities, awarding scholarships to deserving High School graduates who reside in Milford.  To the present, there have been twenty-four students who have been honored.

In addition to the annual scholarship awards, each year the Milford Columbus Committee honors at least three outstanding, prominent, and community-minded Milford citizens for their achievements as professionals, such as our Mayor James Richetelli, and for their lifetime contributions and their devotion to our fair city of Milford and its residents.

On October 12, 1992 a bust of Christopher Columbus was dedicated and placed in the newly named Columbus Plaza between the Parson’s Complex and the Toulson building. This attractive monument which was sculptured by the artist Mr. John Blair, stands as testimonial to the hard work and dedication of all those who made that initial voyage and also to all of the members of our community today, who continue to strive for knowledge, values, and a better life for their families and neighbors, while giving a helping hand to those in need.

Today, the Columbus Committee consists of twenty-six members dedicated to the spirit of promoting education and recognition of outstanding citizenship.
